South Africa extended their unblemished qualification feat as they confirmed a place at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022 despite a 1-1 second leg draw against Algeria in Algiers on Wednesday.
Strikes from Hildah Magaia and Thembi Kgatlana handed Banyana Banyana a 2-0 first leg win in Johannesburg last Friday, piling pressure on the Algerians to seek a crucial revive in the second leg at Stade Omar Hamadi this mid-week.
In Algiers, the home side made an early search for goals and thought they had secured the lead in the 27th minute but Tunisian referee Dorsaf Ganouati ruled it out for a foul on goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.
Despite the setback, the Desert Foxes did not relent and later found the back of the net through Sylia Koui on the brink of half time.
On return from recess, the visitors returned a more determined side in search for an equaliser and were handed a penalty which was later converted by Linda Motlhalo in the 62nd minute.
In the last 10 minutes, the five-time finalists held on to their away goal advantage and ended the Algerians’ dream of their sixth continental experience on North African soil.
After a 3-1 win on aggregate, South Africa confirmed their 12th berth and kept alive their hopes of a maiden WAFCON glory.
