Cameroon put themselves on the brink of qualification for TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022, after thrashing the Gambia 8-0 in the first leg, last qualifying round tie in Yaounde on Friday.

The Indomitable Lionesses pipped Central African Republic 3-0 on aggregate to progress, while the Gambia subdued Sierra Leone 3-1 on aggregate to seal a second round spot.

At the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium of Yaounde, Flora Kameni set the ball rolling for the home side as she gave them the crucial lead as early as two minutes into the encounter.

Ajara Nchout doubled the lead in the 16th minute before Rose Bella made it three 12 minutes later and Kameni notched the fourth with her second of the match in the 31st minute to earn a comfortable first half lead.

After the break, ruthless three-time AWCON finalists resumed the contest on a high as Falone Meffometou extended the lead to five in the 56th minute before Tatiana Ewodo netted the sixth in the 69th minute.

The helpless visitors’ woes were further compounded when Genevieve Ngo hit a brace for the seventh and eighth in the 74th and 86th minutes respectively to seal the rout.

With the huge home triumph, the Cameroonians will make the second leg a mere formality in Banjul, where Gambia will face an uphill task in reviving their qualification hopes on February 23.
